Green Legacy Initiative - ETHIOPIA

September 18, 2023 (FBC) – Ethiopia has planted more than 7.5 saplings during the current green legacy season, surpassing the intended target, 6.5 billion seedlings, for the current planring season, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) confirmed.

Addis Ababa, September 16, 2023 (FBC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed stated that coffee trees planted three years ago as part of Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative are bearing fruit.

“Ethiopia’s Green Legacy program is not only stabilizing the ecosystem but also enhancing agroforestry,” the Prime Minister said.

Addis Ababa, September 5, 2023 (FBC) – Addressing the African Climate Summit 2023 taking place in Nairobi, Kenya, the COP28 President-Designate and the UAE’s Special Envoy for Climate Change, Sultan al Jaber (PhD), stated that Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative is enhancing food security.

Dr. Sultan al Jabar also stated that Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative is stimulating green jobs across the Horn of Africa setting examples for the world.

In his remarks at the Summit, Sultan al Jaber said: “Africa contributes only 3 percent of the global carbon emission but yet suffers the worst consequences. Drought conditions and floods which are being caused by climate change are exposing one-fifth of Africans to hunger,”

Addis Ababa, August 25, 2023 (FBC) – AU Commissioner Josefa Sacko has commended the Green Legacy Initiative and the administration of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s commitment to change the narrative.

In an exclusive interview with ENA, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment (ARBE) said Ethiopia is one of the countries that most suffers from drought, but the seedlings that are being planted will eventually prevent the drought and land degradation.

Addis Ababa, August 22, 2023 (FBC) – The Ethiopian Green Legacy Initiative is a wonderful example of a great restoration projects that benefits people, nature and biodiversity, according to United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The 19th ordinary session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) was held in Addis Ababa last week.

The focus of the conference was to strengthen collaboration among the various institutions and enhance implementation of regional and global environmental frameworks in order to address the environmental challenges facing the continent.

Addis Ababa, August 19, 2023 (FBC) – Ethiopia has shared the experience of its Green Legacy Initiative and progress made at the 19th African Environmental Ministers Conference (AMCEN) being held in Addis Ababa.

The Nineteenth Ordinary Session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) is underway in Addis Ababa.

The four day conference organized under the theme “Seizing opportunity and enhancing collaboration to address environmental challenges in Africa,” has attracted more than 40 environment ministers and over 440 participants from across the continent.

Addis Ababa, August 15, 2023 (FBC) – Minister of Water and Energy, Habtamu Itefa, has called on other countries to emulate Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative as an essential example for sustainable water protection and conservation.

Ethiopia has successfully accomplished first round of the Green Legacy Initiative carried out over the past four years by planting 25 billion tree seedlings.

The nation has also planned to plant another 25 billion seedlings in the second phase which is launched this rainy season.

According to the Minister, Green Legacy Initiative that has been implemented over the last four years is very beneficial for sustainable water resource protection.

Addis Ababa, August 8, 2023 (FBC) – The efforts being made to conserve national parks and strengthen forestations through the Green Legacy Initiative in Ethiopia play significant role to enhance tourism development and environmental protection, Ambassador of France to Ethiopia, Rémi Maréchaux.

In an exclusive interview with ENA, Ambassador Maréchaux said the Green Legacy Initiative and the national parks preservation activities belong to the same approach in preserving the national assets of Ethiopia which are crucial to strengthen the tourism sector and benefits of the people.

He said that to increase the tourism industry, the protection of bio-diversity and preserve the wellbeing of the environment is essential.

Addis Ababa, August 3, 2023 (FBC) – The Ministry of Agriculture of Ethiopia (MoA) stated that more than 6.3 billion tree seedlings have been planted so far out of the 6.5 billion seedlings planned to be planted under this season’s Green Legacy Program.

In an exclusive interview with Fana Broadcasting Corporates’s Zufan Kasahun, the Minister of State for Agriculture, Eyasu Elias, said that 450 million of the tree seedlings planted so far are edible fruits.

He mentioned that this year’s Green Legacy Program will continue until early September.

The Minister of State said that efforts will be unleashed to increase the success rate of planted seedlings to 90 percent.

Addis Ababa, August 2, 2023 (FBC) – Ethiopian embassy in Islamabad held tree planting ceremony as part of the Green Legacy Initiative which is a brainchild of the Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, designed to address climate related issues, reduce poverty, preserve environment and ensure sustainable development.

The Embassy held a tree plantation ceremony in premises of Ethiopia’s Embassy in Islamabad which was attended by Khaja Saad Rafique, Federal Minister of Aviation and Railways,

Nawabzada Shazain Bugti, Federal Minister of Narcotics Control, Romina Khurshid Alam, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister, Ahsan Zafar Bakhatawari, President of Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry, representative of diplomatic corps, senior officers from the Climate Change Ministry, religious leaders, youth association and media outlets.

July 17, 2023 (FBC) – Ethiopians have begun planting 500 million trees in a single campaign as per the announcement made by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to break nation’s own record set four years ago.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has so far launched the second phase of the national Green Legacy Initiative aimed to plant 6 billion seedlings till the end of this rainy season.

Around 9,500 sites have been selected in all regions of the country for the national tree planting campaign.

Senior government officials, religious leaders and members of the diplomatic community are participating in the groundbreaking mass tree planting campaign taking place across the nation.

Ethiopia has planted 25 billion trees during the first Green Legacy Initiative held between 2019-2022 involving participation more than 20 million people from all walks of life.
